How does good leadership effect employee recruitment and retention? It is vitally important that our CPA firms have strong leaders. Poor leadership will lead to poor quality staff, low morale, and increased employee turnover. What makes a good leader?

What are the qualities of a good leader?

Good management comes from good leadership and I believe the job of a leader is to create more leaders.

We want an entire company of leaders.

Leadership is about commanding. We must be clear and hold people accountable. People will leave your firm eventually, so let them leave better and happier. If you are building a culture of leaders, your CPA firm will attract the employees you need to succeed.

How do we become good leaders?

Providing feedback and good communication is essential for being a good leader. When we provide helpful feedback, we become better leaders because it forces us to relay information in a context that people can understand and learn from. Supplying your employees with the proper facts and context will help them to make their own decisions. Transparency with your staff and communicating your firm’s culture and values is essential. Transparency is important when hiring new employees as you want to hire people who fit your culture. As leaders, it is Important to model behaviors for staff to see. We shouldn’t be afraid to fail as employees have to see failure and understand the value and connection failure has with success. Failure is ok and we must show our employees that failure is the only way we grow. We have to put ourselves out there as a leader to show our team what we do, as a result of failure. We ourselves must accept responsibility and don’t deny, blame, or justify.

Leadership with clients

When addressing client issues, leadership as a professional means we must control conversations with our clients. Leadership is also about commanding. We must be clear and hold people accountable. If we don’t make them fix their mistakes, they will never correct it. We need to set clear expectations, processes, and want things done in a specific way.   If you would like to:

Develop better clients. Build a better practice. Live a better life.
