The post-pandemic workplace has changed the entire landscape forever. The pandemic forced us to re-learn and adapt how we operate our organizations.  A majority of employees prefer to work remotely now, and a significant number of recruits prioritize and seek remote only jobs. According to one study, 97% of employees want to be at least partially remote (hybrid or full remote). With fewer CPAs in the workforce, now is the time more than ever to evaluate your firm and determine if remote work is an option.  Is it possible to remain efficient and successful as a primary remote CPA firm?

Intentional and Frequent Communication

From my experience, a great benefit to being remote is efficiency. When we are more efficient, we gain more time, which creates a more positive workplace culture. Working remote gives us an opportunity to choose how we behave. It allows us to set up efficient systems and removes staff frustration. I believe organizations can function well remotely, but we must be intentional and mindful with our communication and interactions. Frequency of contact is important. I have found that shorter conversations that occur more often are a necessity when communicating with remote employees.  The more you communicate and become more mindful and strategic, the greater opportunities you will experience that will lead to the success of your remote or hybrid CPA firm.

Building Remote Teams

Establishing a team-oriented culture is essential in a remote workplace. It is important to spend time talking with each other to facilitate connections that would normally happen in the office. This can be done by structuring meetings through zoom, encouraging face-face interaction, and giving everyone an opportunity to participate. Team building activities are paramount for staying connected and motivated. In one of my organizations, we have a monthly virtual company-wide meeting that helps us stay connected and share information. It is imperative to be intentional about connections and create reasons for team interaction.

It is said that 57% of communication is body language, so how do we get it virtually.

We need to make intentional efforts to connect and build relationships.

Remote workers report higher employee satisfaction and greater productivity.

Transitioning Your Firm

Transitioning your CPA firm to a remote or hybrid workplace environment, affords you a greater opportunity for recruiting better CPAs and employees. One benefit of remote operations is you can recruit worldwide. This allows you a wider radius for recruiting employees, which is especially important for CPA firms as there are fewer professionals in the workforce and high employee turnover.

According to one study, companies saw 25% less employee turnover by offering a remote work environment.
